The Truth Project Lesson 4

Summary of Tour 4: Theology – Who is God?

Do you understand infinity? Can you define and explain infinity?

Who is God?

God is an infinite being.

Theology is the study of God.

We all ought to be theologians.

that their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, to reach all the riches of full assurance of understanding and the knowledge of God’s mystery, which is Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. (Colossians 2:2-3 ESV)

The ultimate source of truth is the nature, character, being and attributes of God Himself. Nothing that is true can contradict the nature of God.

How does the world answer – “Who is God?”

It is not easy to answer but God has revealed Himself to us.

We cut ourselves off God.

The Westminster Confession of Faith answers this question in Section 2 Part 1:

There is but one only living and true God, who is infinite in being and perfection, a most pure spirit, invisible, without body, parts, or passions, immutable, immense, eternal, incomprehensible, almighty, most wise, most holy, most free, most absolute, working all things according to the counsel of his own immutable and most righteous will, for his own glory, most loving, gracious, merciful, long-suffering, abundant in goodness and truth, forgiving iniquity, transgression, and sin; the rewarder of them that diligently seek him; and withal most just and terrible in his judgments; hating all sin; and who will by no means clear the guilty.

R. C. Sproul say that we are at an “ideological, philosophical, and cultural divide . . . we have eclipsed the face of God . . . we have concealed, hidden, or cast a shadow of the face of God.”

Our passion should be to remove whatever puts a filter over God.

We have been asked some difficult questions in this tour:

  • Why did Jesus come?
  • What is truth?
  • What is eternal life?

Jesus answered the question “What is eternal life” in John 17:1-3:

When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you, since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. And this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. (John 17:1-3 ESV)

Eternal life is to know the one true God and His son Jesus Christ.

This is not just discrete, clinical knowledge but an intimate, personal relationship, and communion with God. We have been given the great privilege of being in relationship with God.

Jesus is the source of eternal life that is testified of the Bible:

You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life. (John 5:39-40)

Only when you gaze upon His face will you know who you are.

El Qanna – God is Jealous

  • El Qanna is El Qanna
  • A zeal that arises when sin threaten a covenant relationship

Gazing on the face of God causes us to be transformed and this comes through the Word of God.

The world has attacked God, His Word, and the knowledge of Him.

R. C. Sproul said that 90% of the defense of Christianity is:

  1. The existence of God
  2. The trustworthiness of the Bible

All attacks on the Bible have failed.

Do we really believe the Scriptures to be the Word of God? Do we? Do you trust them?

For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account. (Hebrews 4:12-13 ESV)

Pray that we hunger and thirst for the Word of God! Seek to know him!
